The Dance Form Of Destruction
About
Lord Shiva known as the Lord of Dance when performs Tandava, the universe is created, nurtured and dissolved. The dance is usually linked with the destruction as, while dancing, the long strongly piled matted tresses of Lord Shiva loosen up and falls in the heavenly bodies and destroy them completely.
The dance form is originated from the state Tamil Nadu, Southern India. Lord Shiva is associated with two dance forms that is Lasya which is the gentle form and another is the Tandava which is the violent and aggressive form. Both of them oppose in the motives. One for creation and another for destruction. One can say that these two are the two sides of Lord Shiva nature. He destroys to create.
The idol of the dancing Lord Shiva known as Natraja is made up of bronze usually. It represents the anger of Lord Shiva. It was firstly occurred after the death of Goddess Sati, the wife of Lord Shiva.
Formation
• The surrounding fire represent the manifestation of universe.
• The facial expressions of Lord Shiva represents neutrality and his balance.
• He dance within the boundary of fire called as the Dance of Bliss.
• Lord Shiva holds Damaru in his upper right hand giving beats sound and representing creation. A specific gesture of hand is needed to hold the drum.
• The upper left hand is holding fire which represents destruction. Both the hands oppose showing creation and destruction.
• The small creature on which Lord Shiva dance, is the demon called Apasmara which represents Lord Shiva’s victory over ignorance.
• The second left hand points towards the foot which is raised up. It represents liberation. The up-liftment. It also point towards the left foot showing the sign of the elephant representing the way of ignorance.
Significance Of The Avatar
• The idol surrounded by the circular frame represents the balance he maintain in the whole universe.
• He aims at releasing the souls of all the human beings who live in illusions.
• The dance form, it is shown as the center of the universe but it is within the heart.
• Dancing can be interpreted as an art in which the artist resides. This thought is to evoke the idea of God and his Creation are one.
• Natraja is a visual representation of the dancing posture of Lord Shiva and a Brahman.
• The idol represents the reality of the cosmic destruction time. It simply aims at disappearing all life.
• The fall of half moon from Lord Shiva’s head while dancing results in destruction.
