The concept linked to the paranormal phenomenon is very recent. They are generally considered as omens of death and bad luck. They become the shadow and try to advice which is misleading to impending death.

One of the most famous depictions comes from 1851 by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, “How They Met Themselves” in which the two medieval lovers were walking through the woods at twilight and encounter their alter-egos who glow supernaturally. The man draws his sword in astonishment while his lover collapsed in a horrible swoon.

A best-selling book, “The Night-Side of Nature” written by Catherine Crowe helped make the word well known. However, the concept itself as double spirits, counterparts, alter-egos, has appeared in the myths, folklore, traditions, religious concepts and many cultures throughout the human history.
